What has Carnelian Mutual Fund launched?

This is an active equity fund, which means a fund manager picks the stocks. At least 65% of the money goes into small cap companies. A small cap company is one ranked 251st onwards by market value. Our mutual funds guide explains how these categories work.

Small companies are often less known and trade less often than large ones. Their shares can grow fast. They can also swing sharply.

Up to 35% can go into larger companies, cash-like instruments, units of liquid-type mutual funds, or gold and silver ETFs. Up to 10% can go into InvITs (trusts that own income-earning infrastructure). The aim is long-term growth, with no assurance it will be achieved.

How does the Carnelian Small Cap Fund strategy work?

The managers combine a top-down view (economy and sectors) with a bottom-up view (company by company).

Step

What happens?

1. Research

The team studies sectors, industries and individual companies.

2. Quality check

It looks for lasting business strengths, honest management and healthy balance sheets.

3. Numbers check

It reviews earnings visibility, cash generation and how well a firm uses its money.

4. Price check

It compares the share price with the company’s growth prospects.

5. Build

It spreads money across sectors, keeping at least 65% in small caps.

6. Monitor and rebalance

It adjusts holdings as business, valuations and market conditions change.

Understanding the Carnelian Small Cap Fund with an example

Meera is a 32-year-old professional in Ahmedabad. She invests ₹10,000 during the NFO. At ₹10 per unit, she receives 1,000 units.

The fund managers then spread the pooled money across small companies. As their share prices move, the NAV (net asset value, the price of one unit) changes each business day.

If Meera also starts a ₹5,000 monthly SIP, she buys more units every month at that day’s NAV. This example shows the process only, not any return.

Overseas securities can be up to 35% of net assets. Equity derivatives for non-hedging purposes can go up to 50% of equity assets.

Carnelian Small Cap Fund investment strategy

Stock selection looks at business quality, earnings visibility, return ratios, management and governance, industry position and valuation.

Risk controls include spreading money across sectors and issuers, tracking holdings continuously and managing cash needs. The fund may use futures and options as permitted. Covered call options are capped at 15% of the value of equity holdings.

After the NFO closes, the AMC must invest the money within 30 business days of allotment. Until then, it can park funds in short-term bank deposits or government-backed repo.

Potential benefits of the Carnelian Small Cap Fund

Potential benefit

Why does it matter?

Small cap exposure

Gives access to smaller companies that a large cap fund usually leaves out.

Flexible mandate

Up to 35% can sit outside small caps, so managers can adjust to market conditions.

Low entry point

You can start with ₹500, by lump sum or SIP.

Systematic options

SIP, STP and SWP are available, with SIP pause and modification facilities.

Easy exit

Units can be sold on any business day at NAV, with proceeds in 3 working days.

Key risks of the Carnelian Small Cap Fund

Risk

What does it mean?

Market risk

Share prices fall as well as rise, and your units can be worth less than you paid.

Small cap swings

Smaller companies can move up or down faster than large ones.

Liquidity risk

Some small stocks trade thinly, so selling quickly may be hard or costly.

Derivatives risk

Futures and options can add losses if the manager’s view is wrong.

No assured returns

The SID states there is no assurance the objective will be met.

Carnelian Small Cap Fund Review by Zenith Finserve

Our reading: this is an active fund built for long-term growth from smaller companies. At least 65% must stay in small caps. That makes it a growth slot in a portfolio, not a place for money needed soon.

The fund is new, so there is no track record to study. Both managers joined the AMC in March 2026, and the SID lists no other schemes under their care. Judge the process and the people, not past returns.

A goal at least several years away fits best, ideally with SIPs spread over time. The 1% exit load in the first year rewards patience. Check how the fund sits with your existing holdings, goals and tax position before investing.
